چکیده

Persons with sensorineural hearing loss suffer from degraded speech perception caused by frequency-dependent elevation of hearing thresholds, reduced dynamic range and abnormal loudness growth, and increased temporal and spectral masking. For improving speech perception by persons with moderate loss of this type, a digital hearing aid is implemented as an Android-based smartphone app. It uses sliding-band dynamic range compression for restoring normal loudness of low-level sounds without making the high-level sounds uncomfortably loud and for reducing the perceptible temporal and spectral distortions associated with currently used single and multiband compression techniques. The processing involves application of a frequency dependent gain function calculated on the basis of critical bandwidth based short-time power spectrum and is realized using FFT-based analysis-synthesis. The implementation has a touch-controlled graphical user interface enabling the app user to fine tune the frequency-dependent parameters in an interactive and real-time mode.

Non-linear signal processing using index calculus DBNS arithmetic

This paper discusses the use of a recently introduced index calculus Double-Base Number System (IDBNS) for representing and processing numbers for non-linear digital signal processing; the target application is a digital hearing aid processor. The IDBNS representation uses 2 orthogonal bases (2 and 3) to represent real numbers with arbitrary precision. By restricting the number of digits to one...

An Intrinsically Digital Amplification Scheme for Hearing Aids

Results for linear and wide-dynamic range compression were compared with a new 64-channel digital amplification strategy in three separate studies. The new strategy addresses the requirements of the hearing aid user with efficient computations on an openplatform digital signal processor (DSP). The new amplification strategy is not modeled on prior analog strategies like compression and linear a...

Elements of Effective Hearing Aid Performance (2004)

High-performance hearing aids require flat insertion gain (before processing) and low distortion, so that when signal processing is introduced the pre-processed response of the aid does not bias the processing. High-performance hearing aids need to process the signal to compensate for the patient's perceptive distortions (primarily accentuated high-frequency hearing loss and recruitment), and t...

Digital Hearing Aid – a Review

In the rural sector of India there is a large number of hearing impaired persons. With moderate or acute hearing loss Hearing impaired persons, suffer from opportunities for communicating with others Presently the conventional analog hearing aids have a number of functional limitations such as fixed frequency, lack of flexibility, can’t distinguish speech from noise, etc. The Digital hearing ai...

Non-linear signal processing in digital hearing aids.

Three different non-linear digital signal processing algorithms were developed; LinEar, DynEar and RangeEar. All three provided individual frequency shaping via a seven-band low-power filterbank and compression in two channels. RangeEar and DynEar used wide dynamic range syllabic compression in the low-frequency (LF) channel, while LinEar used compression limiting. In the high-frequency (HF) ch...
